Norwegian Wood - Siriskjær

The Siriskjær project consists of wooden housing blocks in 5 – 8 storeys located at the urban seafront on the eastside of Stavanger. This is the winning project in an international architect competition with 18 entries (84 teams applied to attend). A preliminary project has been finished. Detailed project finished summer 2008. The project has stopped due to the market situation.

Last changed: 22.04.2009
Project description
The project provides a new seafront and new urban life without rejecting history - the expression of the housing blocks is an innovative interpretation of the timber city. The site is a transforming part of Stavanger from a rundown industrial area to a multi functional urban area.

The shape of the building is based on a very precise analysis of the site and the historical character of Stavanger, its seafront warehouses with their varied openings and alleyways that provide glimpses of the sea and also contact between the sea and the functions behind. The daring angular forms, large volumes moulded in regard to climate (wind and sun), create a dynamic play of light and shadow.

There will be approximately 150 apartments within the complex in addition to some commercial areas. This ambitious project require innovation, research and intensive interdisciplinary work. Therefore, two research and development project, supported by Innovation Norway, are initiated to study urban wooden facades and energy efficient- and sustainable outer walls.

Environmental issues

Construction and Materials

Natural materials / Low emitting materials / prefabrications
Norwegian Wood is based on a wooden structural tradition in the region. The architects have aimed for a pure use of woodwork in the project, by applying massive wood in the interior and substructure, hardboards as isolation, plywood as steam breakers in addition to chip roofing in the exterior.

All of the housing blocks will be made of prefabricated elements and is therefore easily constructed on site. This is a great advantage for the building process since the site is unsheltered for rain.

Energy

Air tight building envelope / Heat recovery / District heating / Extra thermal insulation
The architects have resolved their ideas around the passive houses requirements to density and isolation. The environmental actions are adapted to a western-Norwegian climate. The entire residential project is connected to the recovery heating circuit.

Energy consumption: Weighted delivered energy is 80 kWh/m2/year. Net energy requirement 96 kWh/m2/year. The values are only estimated and not calculated.
