The road across the Ifjordfjellet mountain plateau is an important infrastructure connection within the sparsely populated county of Finnmark. For years, this road has been closed for long periods in the winter, when snow drifts and bad weather made it impossible to keep open.
Now the road has been rebuilt to a new design that enables the wind to clear the snow: an elevated roadway with shallow slopes on either side. Cutting and filling has been carefully done in accordance with the surrounding natural landscape.

Section through road, scheme for design of normal road profile. Rounding the junction of fill and terrain to ensure continuity with landscape. Large rocks at the foot of the fill are removed or buried. Shoulders are rounded off to improve snow clearance. Top of cutting is rounded for snow clearance and good adjustment to terrain.
