Norwegian Wood - Valenheimen

The artists’ centre is initiated by Sveio Municipality in cooperation with Fartein Valen Foundation. The project is in a preliminary phase.
Last changed: 09.01.2009

Project description
This centre is located at the former home of the composer Fartein Valen, and comprises a concert hall, seminar and exhibition facilities and a residential part with four studio flats for resident artists. The project tries to express both the «strangeness» and the familiarity of Valen’s music, in relation to nature and the local topography.

Environmental issues
Energy
Heat recovery
/ Extra thermal insulation
/ Air tight building envelope
Energy efficiencyEnergy target: class A for studio flats, class B for concert hall.
Compact building form and sheltered positioning. The studio flats are planned to be passive house standard with a superinsulated building envelope, low air leakage, and balanced ventilation with high efficiency heat recovery.
The concert hall is planned to be constructed with hybrid ventilation with a culvert and heat recovery. The ventilation concept in the concert hall makes use of the relatively high ceiling height to achieve good air quality with relatively few air changes.
Local, renewable energy (type not confirmed)
Universal Design
Visual orientation
/ Accessibility
Vehicle accessible path up to main entrance and step free, spacious access.
Natural guidelines across each surface and planting and signage to ease orientation. One guest room, and the common room are adapted to physically disabled users. Environmental materials specification and good ventilation provide good conditions for asthma and allergy sufferers.
Construction and Materials
Natural materials
/ Local materials
Timber technologyMassive timber walls and roofs, with external insulation. Floor slabs in massive timber. Columns and beams in laminated timber provide additional structure in concert hall. Solid wood acoustic elements (diffusers) of various sizes in the concert hall.
Environmentally friendly materialsLocally sourced materials. Studio flat building clad with untreated timber panels, concert hall clad with local slate. Hemp insulation.
