Norwegian Wood - Villa Extension Kit

Building kit for wooden house extension and rehab. Sketch project

Last changed: 15.11.2008
Project description
The wooden town in Stavanger is an urban area basically consisting of larger wooden villas roughly 100 years old. The villas are often divided horizontally into two home units with a rather low standard compared to newer homes. Present house owners are mostly young and very often families with children.

The neighborhoods consisting of these wooden villas are centrally located in Stavanger and attractive to live in. House owners therefore tend to extend their homes rather than to moving to a larger home in another area. Many of these extensions are carried out in a badly planned and often poor way, and do not seek to enrich the architectural quality of the area.

The idea behind this project is to develop a module system that can be adjusted to meet the most common needs of these neighborhoods. The system is general and seeks to improve the quality of building, living and last but not least the urban environment.

The objective here is to develop a kit that can compliment the existing urban structure, and the project aims on the typical self builders’ house from the early 1900s that dominates the neighborhood of Storhaug and Våland. The initiative is funded by Innovation Norway, a state owned company that promotes innovation and development.

The prototypes are developed as expansion concepts in dialog with the existing house with an entry point from local building tradition. The architecture shall be sustainable regarding resource and material consumption and has a good energy performance.

The prototypes can act as extensions or as small solitary building as teahouses, cabins or dwellings as well as building extensions.
